Long Hair Transplant
The long hair transplant is a variant of the FUE technique, which allows a hair transplant to be performed without completely shaving the head.
It is designed for patients who wish to preserve their appearance immediately after the procedure, while benefiting from a natural and lasting result.
At ANAGEN, this technique is used in specific cases, when medical and anatomical conditions allow.
It requires a good quality donor area, sufficiently thick hair, and localized alopecia.
This method is not possible for everyone, and its indication always relies on a prior medical diagnosis.
The Principle of Long Hair Transplant
Long hair FUE follows the same principle as classic FUE:
the physician extracts follicular units one by one from the donor area (often at the back of the scalp) using a micro-punch smaller than 1 mm.
The main difference:
no complete shaving is necessary.
The hair can be left long, or only a thin discreet strip may be trimmed at the back of the scalp to facilitate extraction.
The grafts are then manually implanted, according to a precise implantation plan defined before the procedure, respecting the natural angle, direction, and density of the hair.

Advantages of Long Hair Transplant
1. Immediate Discretion
The surrounding long hair naturally conceals the donor area and the grafted area.
The patient can quickly resume social activities, with no visible trace of the procedure.
2. Direct Visualization of the Result
Since the hair is not cut, the volume and hairline are immediately visible after the transplant.
This allows the physician to adjust the distribution and density in real time.
3. No Change in Appearance
This method avoids complete shaving of the scalp, often feared by patients, particularly those with professional or social obligations.
4. Natural and Undetectable Result
The transplanted hair blends instantly with the existing hair, for a smooth and harmonious transition from the first days.
Limitations and Feasibility Conditions
Long hair transplant remains a demanding technique and more complex to perform than standard FUE.
It is therefore not suitable for all patients, nor for all indications.
It is indicated for:
- small areas to treat (frontal hairline, temples, scar, targeted densification),
- patients with a dense and accessible donor area,
- individuals seeking a discreet solution, with no change in appearance.
It is contraindicated or limited for:
- advanced alopecia requiring a large number of grafts,
- thin or fragile donor areas,
- very curly or thick hair that complicates extraction,
- or patients seeking comprehensive scalp treatment.
Before any decision, a trichoscopy and a complete medical evaluation are essential to confirm the technical feasibility of this method.
The Process of a Long Hair
Transplant
Personalized Diagnosis
The physician performs a complete hair assessment, including a trichoscopy to analyze the density, texture, and quality of the hair.
A personalized implantation plan is then established according to the patient’s morphology and the area to be treated.
Preparation
Depending on the strategy, a thin strip of hair at the back may be slightly trimmed.
The rest of the hair is preserved to conceal the donor area after the procedure.
Extraction
The follicular units are harvested one by one, through the long hair, using a specific micro-punch.
This is a meticulous step, longer than classic FUE, requiring perfect technical mastery.
Implantation
The grafts are then implanted in the thinning area, respecting the natural direction of the hair.
The long hair allows immediate visualization of the density balance and integration of the result.
Post-Operative Care
Care and washing follow the classic post-transplant protocol:
- regular spraying,
- gentle washing from the second day,
- sun protection,
- and scheduled medical follow-up.
The transplanted hair falls out in the following weeks before regrowing permanently from the 3rd month.

1. What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is a medical procedure that involves taking hair follicles from a donor area (often the back of the head) to reimplant them in thinning or balding areas.
Transplanted grafts retain their permanent character, allowing for definitive and natural regrowth.
2. What is the difference between FUE and FUT?
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a modern technique that allows grafts to be harvested one by one, without a visible linear scar.
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), which is older, involves a surgical strip taken from the back of the head.
FUE is today the most used method for its precision and scar discretion.
3. Who is hair transplant for?
Hair transplant is intended for people suffering from androgenetic alopecia, mainly men between 25 and 60 years old.
A medical evaluation is necessary to check the density and quality of the donor area, as well as the stability of hair loss before considering an intervention.
4. How many grafts can be implanted in one session?
The number of grafts depends on the surface to be treated and the density of the donor area.
A session can range from 1,000 to 6,000 grafts, spread over one or two days depending on the clinical case.
The practitioner determines the most suitable strategy after the diagnosis.
5. Is the procedure painful?
FUE hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia.
The patient is conscious and relaxed throughout the procedure.
Discomfort may be felt after the intervention, but it disappears in a few days with the prescribed care.
6. When does transplanted hair grow back?
Regrowth follows several natural stages:
- Temporary loss of grafts between 2 and 4 weeks after the transplant,
- Start of regrowth around the 3rd or 4th month,
- Visible result at 6 months,
- Final result between 9 and 12 months after the intervention.
Each patient progresses at their own pace.
7. Does hair transplant leave scars?
The FUE technique leaves no linear scar.
Micro-traces may be visible on the donor area for the first few days, but they disappear quickly.
Good healing depends on following post-operative instructions.
8. Does transplanted hair fall out again?
Implanted hair comes from areas genetically programmed not to fall out.
They retain this characteristic after the transplant.
However, non-transplanted hair may continue to thin: regular medical follow-up helps stabilize the progression of baldness.
9. How long does a hair transplant session last?
The duration depends on the number of grafts to be implanted.
On average, a session lasts 6 to 8 hours.
For large transplants (up to 6,000 grafts), the intervention can be performed over two consecutive days.
10. What precautions should be taken after a hair transplant?
The first few days require specific care to protect the grafts:
- Gentle cleaning and thermal water spray,
- Avoid sun, sports, and wearing a cap,
- Sleep with the head slightly elevated,
- Follow the post-operative instructions given by the center.
Personalized follow-up is provided to accompany each stage of healing.
